How to Pray the Rosary |
 |
On the Crucifix, make the sign of the cross, while saying, 'In the
name of the Father'. (Said while making the sign of the Cross by moving
the right hand from the forehead to the chest, to the left shoulder, then
to the right shoulder.) Then recite 'Apostle's Creed'. Then move to the
first Our Father Bead, and say the 'Our Father' prayer, next say three
Hail Marys. These first four prayer are for the intentions of the Pope.
Now you should be at the second Our Father bead, This is where you
meditate on the first Mystery in one of the three groups, ( Joyful
Mysteries, Sorrowful Mysteries, and the Glorious Mysteries). While
meditating on the mystery say one 'Our Father' and ten 'Hail Marys', each
prayer you say count using the beads. After you finish with the Ten Hail
Marys, say the 'Glory Be'. The One Our Father, ten Hail Marys and the
Glory Be are called a decade. Now you continue by medatating on the second
mystary, saying one 'Our Father', and ten 'Hail Marys', and a 'Glory Be".
Repeat this until all five mysteries are said. Here you can start to pray
the second Mystery Group or say the ending prayers, 'Hail Holy
Queen' |

The Mysteries of the Rosary
The Joyful Mysteries
1st Joyful Mystery: The
Annunciation
26 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a
town of Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man
named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary.
28 And coming to her, he said, "Hail, favored one! The Lord is with
you." 29 But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered
what sort of greeting this might be. 30 Then the angel said to her,
"Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31
Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him
Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, 33 and
he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be
no end." 34 But Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I
have no relations with a man?" 35 And the angel said to her in reply,
"The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will
overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of
God. 36 And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a
son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
37 for nothing will be impossible for God." 38 Mary said,
"Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your
word." Then the angel departed from her. (Luk 1,26-38)
2nd Joyful Mystery: The
Visitaion
39 During those days Mary set out and traveled to the hill
country in haste to a town of Judah, 40 where she entered the house
of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary's
greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the holy
Spirit, 42 cried out in a loud voice and said, "Most blessed are you
among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. 43 And how does
this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44
For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my
womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed are you who believed that what was
spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled." 46 And Mary said: "My
soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; 47 my spirit rejoices in
God my savior. 48 For he has looked upon his handmaid's lowliness;
behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed. 49 The Mighty One
has done great things for me, and holy is his name. (Luk 1,39-49)
3rd Joyful Mystery: The
Nativity
6 While they were there, the time came for her to have her child,
7 and she gave birth to her firstborn son. 3 She wrapped him in
swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them
in the inn. 8 Now there were shepherds in that region living in the
fields and keeping the night watch over their flock. 9 The angel of
the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they
were struck with great fear. 10 The angel said to them, "Do not be
afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for
all the people. 11 For today in the city of David a savior has been
born for you who is Messiah and Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for
you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a
manger." (Luk 2,6-12)
4th Joyful Mystery: The
Presentation
22 When the days were completed for their purification 9
according to the law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to
the Lord, 23 just as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every
male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord," 24 and to
offer the sacrifice of "a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons," in
accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord. 25 Now there was
a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout,
awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the holy Spirit was upon him.
26 It had been revealed to him by the holy Spirit that he should not
see death before he had seen the Messiah of the Lord. 27 He came in
the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to
perform the custom of the law in regard to him, 28 he took him into
his arms and blessed God, saying: 29 "Now, Master, you may let your
servant go in peace, according to your word, 30 for my eyes have seen
your salvation, 31 which you prepared in sight of all the peoples,
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people
Israel." 33 The child's father and mother were amazed at what was
said about him; 34 and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his
mother, "Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel,
and to be a sign that will be contradicted 35 (and you yourself a
sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed." (Luk
2,22-35)
5th Joyful Mystery: The Finding in the
Temple
41 Each year his parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of
Passover, 42 and when he was twelve years old, they went up according
to festival custom. 43 After they had completed its days, as they
were returning, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did
not know it. 44 Thinking that he was in the caravan, they journeyed
for a day and looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances,
45 but not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem to look for him.
46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the
midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions,
47 and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his
answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his
mother said to him, "Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have
been looking for you with great anxiety." 49 And he said to them,
"Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's
house?" 50 But they did not understand what he said to them.
51 He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to
them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. (Luk 2,41-51)
The Sorrowful Mysteries
1st Sorrowful Mystery: Agony in the
Garden
36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, 22 and
he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."
37 He took along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, 23 and began to
feel sorrow and distress. 38 Then he said to them, "My soul is
sorrowful even to death. 24 Remain here and keep watch with me." 39
He advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying, "My Father, 25 if it
is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will."
(Mat 26,36-39)
39 Then going out he went, as was his custom, to the Mount of
Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 When he arrived at the
place he said to them, "Pray that you may not undergo the test." 41
After withdrawing about a stone's throw from them and kneeling, he prayed,
42 saying, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me;
still, not my will but yours be done." 43 (And to strengthen him an
angel from heaven appeared to him. 44 He was in such agony and he
prayed so fervently that his sweat became like drops of blood falling on the
ground.) (Luk 22,44)
2nd Sorrowful Mystery: The
Scourging
15 Now on the occasion of the feast the governor was accustomed
to release to the crowd one prisoner whom they wished. 16 And at that
time they had a notorious prisoner called (Jesus) Barabbas. 17 So
when they had assembled, Pilate said to them, "Which one do you want me to
release to you, (Jesus) Barabbas, or Jesus called Messiah?" 18 For he
knew that it was out of envy that they had handed him over. 19 While
he was still seated on the bench, his wife sent him a message, "Have nothing to
do with that righteous man. I suffered much in a dream today because of him."
20 The chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for
Barabbas but to destroy Jesus. 21 The governor said to them in reply,
"Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" They answered, "Barabbas!"
22 Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus called
Messiah?" They all said, "Let him be crucified!" 23 But he said,
"Why? What evil has he done?" They only shouted the louder, "Let him be
crucified!" 24 When Pilate saw that he was not succeeding at all, but
that a riot was breaking out instead, he took water and washed his hands in the
sight of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this man's blood. Look to it
yourselves." 25 And the whole people said in reply, "His blood be
upon us and upon our children." 26 Then he released Barabbas to them,
but after he had Jesus scourged, 14 he handed him over to be crucified. (Mat
27,15-26)
3rd Sorrowful Mystery: Crowning with
Thorns
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus inside the
praetorium and gathered the whole cohort around him. 28 They stripped
off his clothes and threw a scarlet military cloak about him. 29
Weaving a crown out of thorns, they placed it on his head, and a reed in his
right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, "Hail, King of the
Jews!" 30 They spat upon him and took the reed and kept striking him
on the head. 31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of
the cloak, dressed him in his own clothes, and led him off to crucify him. (Mat
27,27-31)
4th Sorrowful Mystery: Carring of the
Cross
16 Then he handed him over to them to be crucified. 6 So they
took Jesus, 17 and carrying the cross himself 7 he went out to what
is called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha. (Joh 19,16-17)
5th Sorrowful Mystery: The
Crucifixion
22 They brought him to the place of Golgotha (which is translated
Place of the Skull). 23 They gave him wine drugged with myrrh, but he
did not take it. 24 Then they crucified him and divided his garments
by casting lots for them to see what each should take. 25 It was nine
o'clock in the morning 10 when they crucified him. 26 The inscription
of the charge against him read, "The King of the Jews." 27 With him
they crucified two revolutionaries, one on his right and one on his left.
28 * 29 Those passing by reviled him, shaking their heads
and saying, "Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
30 save yourself by coming down from the cross." 31
Likewise the chief priests, with the scribes, mocked him among themselves and
said, "He saved others; he cannot save himself. 32 Let the Messiah,
the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe."
Those who were crucified with him also kept abusing him. 33 At noon
darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 34
And at three o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema
sabachthani?" which is translated, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
35 Some of the bystanders who heard it said, "Look, he is calling
Elijah." 36 One of them ran, soaked a sponge with wine, put it on a
reed, and gave it to him to drink, saying, "Wait, let us see if Elijah comes to
take him down." 37 Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. (Mar
15,22-37)
The Glorious Mysteries
1st Glorious Mystery: The
Resurrection
1 After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning,
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. 2 And behold,
there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven,
approached, rolled back the stone, and sat upon it. 3 His appearance
was like lightning and his clothing was white as snow. 4 The guards
were shaken with fear of him and became like dead men. 5 Then the
angel said to the women in reply, "Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking
Jesus the crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has been raised just as
he said. Come and see the place where he lay. (Mat 28,1-6)
2nd Glorious Mystery: The
Ascension
36 While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their
midst and said to them, "Peace be with you." 37 But they were
startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. 38
Then he said to them, "Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your
hearts? 39 Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch
me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I
have." 40 And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
41 While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he
asked them, "Have you anything here to eat?" 42 They gave him a piece
of baked fish; 43 he took it and ate it in front of them.
44 He said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I
was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in
the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled." 45 Then he opened their
minds to understand the scriptures. 46 And he said to them, "Thus it
is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day
47 and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be
preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48
You are witnesses of these things. 49 And (behold) I am sending the
promise of my Father 12 upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed
with power from on high." 50 Then he led them (out) as far as
Bethany, raised his hands, and blessed them. 51 As he blessed them he
parted from them and was taken up to heaven. (Luk 24,36-51)
3rd Glorious Mystery: Descent of the Holy
Spirit
1 When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one
place together. 2 And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a
strong driving wind, 2 and it filled the entire house in which they were.
3 Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and
came to rest on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the
holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them
to proclaim. (Act 2,1-4)
4th Glorious Mystery: The
Assumption
Blessed art thou of the most high God above all the women upon the earth;
and blessed be the Lord God, which hath created the heavens and the earth, which
hath directed thee to the cutting off of the head of the chief of our enemies.
... Thou hast done all these things by thine hand: thou hast done much good to
Israel, and God is pleased therewith: blessed be thou of the Almighty Lord for
evermore. And all the people said, So be it. (Jdt 13,18-20; 15,10)
5th Glorious Mystery: The
Coronation
1There appeared a great sign in heaven: a woman clothed with the
sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. (Rev
12,1)
